Tax sales
Alabama counties may sell either tax liens or the property, and Jefferson County has sold tax liens since the 2021 tax year. The Tax Collector holds separate online lien auctions for the Birmingham and Bessemer Divisions each May, recently starting May 6, 2025 and May 5 for the 2025 tax year, running weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until every parcel is offered. The Bessemer auction runs on GovEase with no in-person bidding, and delinquent parcel lists for each division are posted on the Tax Collector's website.
Foreclosure sales
Most Alabama mortgage foreclosures are nonjudicial sales held at the courthouse door, at the Birmingham or Bessemer Division courthouse depending on where the property sits. Notices are published in a local newspaper before the sale.
