How property is sold here
Honolulu County follows Hawaii's rules, with its own calendar and offices. Read the Hawaii guide for how the state works.
Tax sales
Hawaii sells the property itself, not tax liens. The City and County of Honolulu's Director of Budget and Fiscal Services auctions tax-delinquent parcels in person for cashier's checks paid in full at the sale; the most recent sale was May 5, 2026 at Mission Memorial Auditorium, 550 South King Street. The owner can redeem within one year by repaying the buyer's price, costs and 12% a year interest, and the parcel list is published as a legal notice in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser before each sale.
Foreclosure sales
Hawaii has no sheriff sales; foreclosures are either judicial, where the court orders a public auction run by a court-appointed commissioner, or nonjudicial under a power of sale. Nonjudicial sale notices for owner-occupied homes can be posted on the state's mfdr.ehawaii.gov site, and sale notices also run in the newspaper legal notices.
Assessed values
The Real Property Assessment Division values every property every year as of October 1 before the tax year, with appeals taken each year from December 15 to January 15.
Transfer tax
Hawaii charges a state conveyance tax paid to the Bureau of Conveyances on a sliding scale, from $0.10 per $100 for properties under $600,000 up to $1.00 per $100 at $10 million and above, with higher rates on non-owner-occupant buyers of homes and condos; Honolulu adds no county transfer tax.
Worth knowing
Honolulu is a consolidated City and County covering all of Oahu, with no separate incorporated cities.
Worth knowing
Deeds for every Hawaii county are recorded at one statewide office, the Bureau of Conveyances at 1151 Punchbowl St. in Honolulu.
Worth knowing
Property may be in the Regular System or in Land Court, where the state issues a Certificate of Title, so check which system a parcel is in before searching.
