How property is sold here

Winnebago County follows Illinois's rules, with its own calendar and offices. Read the Illinois guide for how the state works.

Tax sales

Illinois sells tax liens, not the property. The Winnebago County Treasurer holds an annual tax sale where buyers bid on unpaid taxes, and redemptions after the sale are paid to the County Clerk. If taxes are not redeemed, the tax buyer can petition the court for a tax deed about two and a half years after the sale.

Foreclosure sales

Winnebago County sheriff sales are held online through ROUP at winnebagocountysheriff-il.roup.com, and on-site sheriff sales are no longer offered. The Sheriff does not post a list of foreclosure sales, so check the ROUP site or call Civil Process at 815-319-6150.

Assessed values

Values are set by township assessors and reviewed by the Supervisor of Assessments, which mails assessment change notices and applies equalization each year.

Transfer tax

Illinois charges a state transfer tax of $0.50 per $500 of value and Winnebago County adds $0.25 per $500, for $0.75 per $500 in total.
