How property is sold here
Jefferson County follows Kentucky's rules, with its own calendar and offices. Read the Kentucky guide for how the state works.
Tax sales
Kentucky sells certificates of delinquency (tax liens), not the property itself. The Jefferson County Clerk posts the list of unpaid prior-year bills in June and holds a lottery sale in July; in 2026 the list went up June 17 and the drawing was July 17 at Metro Hall, 527 W. Jefferson Street. Buyers register ahead with a 25% deposit and a Department of Revenue certificate, attendance is not required, and holders of prior-year certificates get a priority sale first.
Foreclosure sales
Foreclosures in Kentucky go through the courts and are sold at Master Commissioner judicial sales held at the Jefferson County Judicial Center, 700 W. Jefferson Street, 2nd floor Jury Pool Room. Sales are usually scheduled four to six weeks out and listed at jeffcomm.org; buyers need 10% down with a pre-approved bond or full payment, and the balance is due within 30 days.
Assessed values
The Jefferson County PVA values property as of January 1 each year and reassesses homes and businesses at least once every four years, rotating through the county's nine market areas.
Transfer tax
Kentucky charges a deed transfer tax of $0.50 per $500 of value (0.1%), paid by the seller to the County Clerk, with no added Louisville Metro transfer tax found.
Land bank
The Louisville and Jefferson County Landbank Authority, staffed by Louisville Metro's Vacant and Public Property Administration, sells vacant lots and structures through programs such as Side Yard, Last Look and Request for Proposal.
Worth knowing
Louisville and Jefferson County merged into Louisville Metro government in 2003, but the PVA lists 83 incorporated taxing jurisdictions, mostly small home rule cities, that keep their own governments and may send separate tax bills.
Worth knowing
If a Master Commissioner sale brings less than two thirds of the appraisal, the owner keeps a six month right of redemption.
Worth knowing
The PVA's free search does not include owner name lookup; that requires a paid subscription.
