How property is sold here
Greene County follows Missouri's rules, with its own calendar and offices. Read the Missouri guide for how the state works.
Tax sales
Missouri sells a tax lien at the first and second offerings, not the property outright: the winning bidder gets a Certificate of Purchase and can ask for a Collector's deed only after a one-year redemption period (90 days for third offer sales, none for post-third offer sales). Greene County holds its one annual tax sale on the fourth Monday in August at 10 AM in Room 212 of the Historic Courthouse, 940 N Boonville Ave, Springfield, for properties owing two or more years of taxes on May 1. The list is published in the Daily Events in late July and early August and posted on the Collector's website, bidders must be Missouri residents or registered businesses and register August 1 through the Thursday before the sale, and payment is due by cashier's check by 3:30 PM that day.
Foreclosure sales
Most Greene County home foreclosures are private trustee sales under a deed of trust rather than court-ordered sheriff sales, and the trustee's deed is then recorded with the Recorder of Deeds.
Assessed values
The Greene County Assessor reassesses real property in odd-numbered years, most recently in 2025, with values set as of January 1.
Transfer tax
Missouri has no real estate transfer tax, so there is no state, county or city tax on deeds in Springfield; buyers pay only Recorder of Deeds recording fees, which rise by $2 per document on August 28, 2026.
Worth knowing
Only Missouri residents or registered Missouri businesses with no delinquent taxes can bid at the Greene County tax sale.
Worth knowing
Surplus bid money from the tax sale can be released only to owners or lienholders, not to unrelated third parties.
Worth knowing
