Foreclosure sales
Hudson County Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff posts a free online list of upcoming foreclosure sales with sale dates, addresses, plaintiffs and defendants for every Hudson town.

How property is sold here
Hudson County follows New Jersey's rules, with its own calendar and offices. Read the New Jersey guide for how the state works.
Tax sales
New Jersey sells tax liens, not the property: investors bid at a public auction for a tax sale certificate, and interest keeps running to the buyer until the owner pays. In Jersey City, unpaid property taxes and other municipal charges still open at the end of the yearly cycle on November 11 go into the tax sale, which the city holds in December. If the owner does not pay off the lien within two years of the sale, the certificate holder can start a foreclosure to take the property.
Foreclosure sales
Court-ordered mortgage foreclosures in Hudson County are sold at Sheriff's sales, usually on Thursdays about twice a month. The Hudson County Sheriff's Office posts upcoming sales, with dates and addresses, on its online sales listing.
Assessed values
Each Hudson town's own assessor sets values under oversight of the county Board of Taxation, and Jersey City's current values come from a full citywide revaluation completed in 2017.
Transfer tax
New Jersey charges a seller-paid Realty Transfer Fee, collected by the Hudson County Register when the deed is recorded, and since July 10, 2025 sellers of property over $1 million also pay a Graduated Percent Fee of 1% to 3.5% of the full price.
Land bank
The Jersey City Redevelopment Agency (JCRA) offers city-area sites for sale and redevelopment through public requests for proposals posted on its website.
Worth knowing
Hudson County has a separate Register of Deeds and Mortgages; deeds are not recorded by the County Clerk here as they are in most New Jersey counties.
Worth knowing
Tax sales in New Jersey are run town by town, so Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne and the county's other towns each set their own sale and post their own lists.
Worth knowing
The Graduated Percent Fee on sales over $1 million rose to as much as 3.5% and moved from the buyer to the seller on July 10, 2025, which matters for Hudson's high-priced waterfront condos.
