How property is sold here
Lane County follows Oregon's rules, with its own calendar and offices. Read the Oregon guide for how the state works.
Tax sales
Oregon does not sell tax liens, and Lane County says plainly that it sells no tax lien certificates; the county forecloses after three years of unpaid taxes and takes the deed if the property is not redeemed. Lane County then sells the property by sealed bid auction as needed, with no set time of year, after running the list in the Register-Guard for four weeks and posting it on the Property Management page; the last auction was September 22, 2026, and the next takes bids until 10 a.m. November 10, 2026. Winners pay a 20% deposit within 24 hours and the rest within 5 business days, and get a quitclaim deed with no title insurance.
Foreclosure sales
Most Oregon foreclosures are non-judicial trustee's sales run by private trustees, and the Sheriff has no information on them. Court-ordered sheriff's sales in Lane County are held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. in the front lobby of the Sheriff's Office, 125 E 8th Avenue in Eugene, and are advertised in the Register-Guard and on the Oregon State Sheriffs' Association site.
Assessed values
The Lane County Assessor sets each property's real market value as of January 1 every year, and tax is charged on the lower of that value or its maximum assessed value, which can grow by no more than 3% a year under Measure 50.
Transfer tax
Oregon has no state real estate transfer tax and bars new local ones, so there is none in Eugene, Springfield or anywhere else in Lane County; recording a one-page deed costs $102 since July 1, 2026.
Worth knowing
Most land records in Lane County are gathered in RLID, the Regional Land Information Database, a paid subscription service with a free Quick Look; RLID is moving to new.rlid.org, with the old site retired November 2, 2026.
Worth knowing
Lane County warns that many tax-foreclosed parcels are small, oddly shaped or unbuildable, and it often transfers some to other agencies or nonprofits for affordable housing before auction.
Worth knowing
Properties that fail to sell at two public auctions can be bought at a private sale negotiated directly with the county's Property Management Officer.
