How property is sold here
Multnomah County follows Oregon's rules, with its own calendar and offices. Read the Oregon guide for how the state works.
Tax sales
Oregon does not sell tax liens; the county forecloses on property once taxes are three full years delinquent and takes the deed after the redemption period ends. Multnomah County's Tax Title Program then sells the property at in-person oral auctions at the Multnomah Building, 501 SE Hawthorne Blvd, with the most recent held October 12, 2026 and another planned for December 2026. Some properties are also sold through real estate brokers or to adjacent owners, and every sale is announced first on the Tax Title website.
Foreclosure sales
Most Oregon home foreclosures are non-judicial trustee's sales run by private trustees. Court-ordered judicial foreclosure sales are run by the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office and published on the MCSO Property Sales blog and the statewide oregonsheriffssales.org portal.
Assessed values
DART values property as of January 1 every year and finalizes values by mid-September, with tax statements following in the fall.
Transfer tax
Oregon has no state real estate transfer tax, and a 2012 constitutional amendment bars new local ones, so there is no transfer tax in Portland or elsewhere in Multnomah County (only Washington County's older tax survived).
Worth knowing
Portland, the county seat, keeps its own PortlandMaps site with zoning, permits and assessor data drawn from county records.
Worth knowing
Under House Bill 2089, former owners can now claim surplus proceeds from tax foreclosure sales through the Oregon State Treasury.
Worth knowing
County buyers get no title insurance, and the county says title companies may still show old liens after a Tax Title sale.
