How property is sold here
Greene County follows Pennsylvania's rules, with its own calendar and offices. Read the Pennsylvania guide for how the state works.
Tax sales
The Tax Claim Bureau holds its upset sale each September as an in-person auction at the 4-H Building at the Greene County Fairgrounds; the 2026 sale was September 16. Properties not sold go to a judicial sale (June 3 in 2026), where they are sold free of mortgages and liens, and leftovers go to a repository sale held when the Solicitor decides. Ads and lists are posted on the Tax Claim Bureau page.
Foreclosure sales
Sheriff sales are held at 10:00 AM in the Main Hall of the Greene County Courthouse in Waynesburg, usually on one Friday a month. The list for each date is posted on the county's online sale listing page.
Assessed values
Current values trace to a countywide reassessment that took effect for the 2003 tax year.
Transfer tax
Pennsylvania charges 1% state realty transfer tax, and Greene County towns and school districts usually add a 1% local share, for about 2% total.
Worth knowing
Greene County is a large coal and natural gas county, so many parcels carry separate mineral and oil and gas interests.
Worth knowing
The upset sale does not clear mortgages or other liens; only the judicial sale sells property free and clear.
Worth knowing
The Tax Claim Bureau says its sale lists are not updated after they are posted, so call 724-852-5232 to confirm a parcel is still on the sale.
