How property is sold here
Lawrence County follows Pennsylvania's rules, with its own calendar and offices. Read the Pennsylvania guide for how the state works.
Tax sales
The Lawrence County Tax Claim Bureau holds two sales a year: a judicial (free and clear) sale in April and an upset sale in September, held in person at the Lawrence County Government Center in New Castle. The 2026 upset sale was Thursday, September 24. Properties are published 30 days before each sale in the New Castle News and Ellwood City Ledger, and lists can be bought from the office.
Foreclosure sales
Sheriff sales are held about every two months (January, March, May, July, September and November in 2026) at 10:00 AM in the Commissioners' Meeting Room of the Government Center, 430 Court Street, New Castle. Dates and the current sale list are posted on the Sheriff's page and advertised in the New Castle News and the Lawrence County Law Journal.
Assessed values
Values come from a countywide reassessment reported as 2003, and the Assessment Office says assessed value does not represent market value.
Transfer tax
Pennsylvania charges 1% state realty transfer tax, and Lawrence County towns and school districts usually add a 1% local share, for about 2% total.
Land bank
The Redevelopment Authority of Lawrence County transfers residential, commercial and vacant properties to buyers who submit an application and fee, and it coordinates land bank work in the county.
Worth knowing
The City of New Castle and the Ellwood, Laurel, Mohawk, Shenango and Wilmington school districts send delinquent taxes to Portnoff Law Associates, not the Tax Claim Bureau, so check both sources for back taxes.
Worth knowing

Worth knowing
The Tax Claim Bureau accepts only cash, cashier's checks, money orders or cards with a 2.45% fee; personal and business checks are not accepted.
