How property is sold here
Westmoreland County follows Pennsylvania's rules, with its own calendar and offices. Read the Pennsylvania guide for how the state works.
Tax sales
The Tax Claim Bureau holds the annual upset sale each September (September 14 in 2026) and a judicial sale in the fall (October 1 in 2026). Unsold parcels can then go through a bid-off sale, a private sale, or the repository, where bids need a 60-day consent from the county, town and school district. Sales are in person at the Courthouse in Greensburg, and lists are posted on the Tax Sale Information pages.
Foreclosure sales
Sheriff sales are held monthly except December, at 9:00 am in the Commissioners Meeting Rooms in the Courthouse. Sale lists and results are posted on the Sheriff Sales page.
Assessed values
Westmoreland County still uses assessed values from 1972, its last countywide reassessment.
Transfer tax
Most towns charge 2 percent in total (1 percent state plus 1 percent local), while Greensburg, Latrobe and Murrysville charge 2.5 percent.
Land bank
The Westmoreland County Land Bank, formed in 2013 and run with the Redevelopment Authority, takes in vacant, abandoned and tax-delinquent property and lists its properties on the county site.
Worth knowing
Values date to 1972, so assessed values are far below today's market prices and are not a guide to value.
Worth knowing
Judicial sale bidders must pre-register in person at least 10 days ahead and be present on sale day; mail and email registration are refused.
Worth knowing
Upset sale property is not sold free and clear, while judicial and repository sales clear most liens except federal ones.
