How property is sold here
Bell County follows Texas's rules, with its own calendar and offices. Read the Texas guide for how the state works.
Tax sales
Texas does not sell tax liens; Bell County sells the property itself after a tax lawsuit and judgment, and the buyer gets a Sheriff's Deed without warranty. Tax sales begin at 10:00 AM on the first Tuesday of the month at the Bell County Clerk's Alcove east of the main entrance of the Bell County Justice Complex, 1201 Huey Drive, Belton, but are held only about 4 to 5 times a year. Bid sheets are posted at mvbalaw.com about three weeks before, bidders must register in person from about 9:45 AM with a government ID, and winners pay in full by cashier's check to the District Clerk between 1:00 and 3:00 PM that day.
Foreclosure sales
Mortgage foreclosures in Bell County are trustee sales held on the first Tuesday of each month at the Bell County Clerk's alcove east of the main entrance of the Justice Complex, 1201 Huey Drive, Belton. Notices of sale are filed with the County Clerk and posted on its Foreclosure Notices page.
Assessed values
BellCAD appraises property for all taxing units in the county, with values set as of January 1 each year.
Transfer tax
Texas has no real estate transfer tax, so there is no state, county or city tax on deeds in Killeen; buyers pay only County Clerk recording fees.
Worth knowing
Property taxes in Bell County are collected by the appraisal district (BellCAD), not the county Tax Assessor-Collector, which handles vehicle registration.
Worth knowing
Bids at Bell County tax sales are accepted only in person; mail, phone and internet bids are not allowed, and the deed is issued only to the person who bid.
Worth knowing
A tax sale wipes out liens of parties named in the judgment, but liens of anyone not named survive, so the judgment at the District Clerk's office is worth checking first.
