How property is sold here
Harris County follows Texas's rules, with its own calendar and offices. Read the Texas guide for how the state works.
Tax sales
Texas sells the property itself after a tax lawsuit, not tax liens. The Harris County delinquent tax sale is held the first Tuesday of every month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bayou City Event Center, where the eight Constables auction properties in their precincts at the same time, in the order published in the Daily Court Review. Bidders must register with the Tax Assessor-Collector each year, pay in full in cash or certified funds right after the sale, and most sold properties remain subject to the former owner's right of redemption.
Foreclosure sales
Mortgage foreclosures in Harris County are trustee sales held the first Tuesday of every month at the Bayou City Event Center, 9401 Knight Road, Houston. Notices of trustee sale are filed and posted at the County Clerk's office, 201 Caroline, 3rd floor, 21 days before the sale and are also on the Clerk's website.
Assessed values
HCAD appraises every property at full market value every year.
Transfer tax
Texas has no real estate transfer tax.
Land bank
The Houston Land Bank, working with the City of Houston, acquires vacant, abandoned and damaged properties and sells homes and lots for redevelopment.
Worth knowing
Houston and Pasadena are both inside Harris County, and each Constable precinct sells its own tax sale properties at the monthly auction.
Worth knowing
Tax sale properties that get no minimum bid can be struck off to the taxing unit and offered later at a resale with a lower minimum bid.
Worth knowing
