    Where the records are

The county offices an investor deals with in Newport News city, and what each one puts online.

    Deeds and mortgages

Newport News Circuit Court Clerk, Land Records. Land record indexes and images back to January 1, 1896 are online only through the Clerk's remote access subscription ($500 a year, $250 for 6 months or $125 for 3 months); records can be viewed free at the Clerk's office at 2500 Washington Ave.

City of Newport News Real Estate Assessor's Office. The Assessor's free online property assessment search finds any parcel by street address or tax parcel number and shows owner and assessed value.

    Tax sales

    Foreclosure sales

Trustee sales (private trustees named in each deed of trust). There is no city-run foreclosure auction; trustee sales are advertised in a newspaper by the trustee, and the recorded deeds of trust and trustee's deeds are in the Circuit Court Clerk's land records.

    Parcel maps

Newport News GeoHub (City GIS). The city's free GeoHub has online maps and downloadable GIS data, including parcels.

    How property is sold here

Newport News city follows Virginia's rules, with its own calendar and offices. Read the Virginia guide for how the state works.

    Tax sales

Virginia does not sell tax liens. Newport News is an independent city, so the City Treasurer collects delinquent real estate taxes and, after a court case, the property itself is sold at a judicial tax sale auction. There is no fixed sale month; upcoming auctions are announced on the Treasurer's Real Estate/Property Auctions page.

    Foreclosure sales

Most Virginia foreclosures are trustee sales held without a court case, run by the trustee named in the deed of trust and advertised in a local newspaper before the sale. There is no city or sheriff auction calendar for these sales.

    Assessed values

The Real Estate Assessor reassesses every parcel in Newport News each year at fair market value, with new values taking effect July 1.

    Transfer tax

Virginia charges a state recordation tax of $0.25 per $100 of value on deeds plus a grantor tax paid by the seller, and Virginia law lets the city add a local recordation tax of up to one third of the state tax, all paid to the Circuit Court Clerk when the deed is recorded.

    Worth knowing

Newport News is an independent city, so the City Treasurer, Real Estate Assessor and Newport News Circuit Court Clerk do the jobs a county would.

    Worth knowing

The city's total taxable real estate assessment was about $23.6 billion for 2025-26, taxed at $1.18 per $100.
