A free public computer terminal in the office covers recorded documents, the old paid online Document Library (1920 to 1987 documents and all plats) ends in 2026, and a new free Records Public Access site with watermarked images is due in fall 2026, with fees only for printed or certified copies.

Johnson County Appraiser's Office. Owner names, appraised values and parcel details are free on the county's Location Maps and Information site, searchable by address, property ID, owner name or KUPN.
Tax sales
Johnson County Treasurer, Tax Foreclosure. The Treasurer posts the auction date and parcel list free on the Tax Foreclosure page about 30 days before each sale, and delinquent tax bills can be looked up free online.
Foreclosure sales
Johnson County Sheriff's Office, Civil Division Foreclosure Sales. A free online list shows upcoming and past sheriff sales with the sale date and time, case number, plaintiff, defendant, plaintiff's attorney and newspaper publication dates.
Parcel maps
Johnson County AIMS (Automated Information Mapping System). The free AIMS online map shows parcels, zoning, flood zones, aerial photos and owner information, and AIMS sells GIS data and printed maps.
How property is sold here
Johnson County follows Kansas's rules, with its own calendar and offices. Read the Kansas guide for how the state works.
Tax sales
Kansas does not sell tax liens; the county forecloses on tax-delinquent parcels in District Court and auctions the property itself. The Johnson County Treasurer holds the tax foreclosure auction in person only, with bidders registering the morning of the sale, and no auction is scheduled at the moment, so the date, place and parcel list will be posted on the Treasurer's Tax Foreclosure page about 30 days ahead and run in the newspaper once a week for three weeks. Full payment in cash or certified funds is due at the District Court Clerk by 3 p.m. on sale day, the court confirms the sale four to six weeks later, and the Sheriff issues a Sheriff's Deed about 30 days after that.
Foreclosure sales
Mortgage foreclosure sheriff sales are held on the courthouse steps in Olathe, usually on Wednesdays at 10 a.m., by the Johnson County Sheriff's Civil Division. Each sale is published three times in The Legal Record and listed on the Sheriff's free online Foreclosure Sales page.
Assessed values
The Johnson County Appraiser revalues all property every year at fair market value as of January 1 and mails Notices of Appraised Value each February or March.
Transfer tax
Kansas has no real estate transfer tax, and the state mortgage registration tax was repealed starting in 2019, so buyers in Overland Park and Olathe pay only recording fees ($21 for the first page of a deed and $17 for each added page).
Worth knowing
Olathe is the county seat and Overland Park is the largest city, two of the 20 cities in the county.
Worth knowing
The Register of Deeds is moving to a new records system in fall 2026; the old paid subscription service ends, and the new public access site will let anyone view watermarked deed images for free after creating an account.
Worth knowing
People who owe delinquent Johnson County property taxes, or who have a legal interest in a parcel, cannot bid at the tax foreclosure auction, and the county keeps no public list of unsold parcels.
